Centre gets waste wise
Northbridge Plaza Becomes Waste-Wise
In recent times many individuals and organisations have become increasingly environmentally aware, although there is still a lot of unnecessary waste occurring, particularly in large establishments such as shopping centres.
In light of these concerns Northbridge Plaza is doing its bit to conserve the environment by implementing new systems to encourage the environmentally responsible management of waste.
Some of the key activity includes:
- Implementing major waste recycling from the centre, which has the potential to save 720 tonnes of waste per annum. This waste has been diverted from the landfills each month and can be used to make electricity and fertilisers.
- The feasibility of rainwater harvesting is being investigated as a potential method of supplying water to the cooling towers. This will offer a future potential saving of around 15KL per day.
- Flow restrictors, new tapware and dual flush cisterns have been introduced across the centre's amenities, with a resulting saving of another 20KL per day in water consumption.
- Garden waste has also been diverted from landfill to an organic waste recycler.
- Twin digital time clocks were installed allowing staging of energy distribution leading to a reduction of 15% energy.
